Introducing Country Singer/Songwriter
Kathy Lee
Kathy Lee was born and raised in the mountain areas of Queensland which have spawned many of Australia's finest musical talents - the Darling Downs. She has an affinity with the country having grown up on a grain and cattle property at the foot of the Bunya Mountains. Kathy has exceptional singing, songwriting and musical talents with a natural country-girl emotion.Country Music has always played a huge part in Kathy's life as she has been writing and singing songs about her unique country life since she was just 9 years old!
As a youngster, Kathy started out on the 'Club Scene' with the Dalby Country Music Club and at sixteen she played 'main stage' at the National Gympie Country Music Muster. Before pursuing a professional career in Country Music, Kathy spent a number of years establishing herself as a teacher of Commerce, Economics and Music whilst continuing to write new material and perform in and around her local town of Toowoomba.
In October 1998, Kathy, together with duo partner Veronica (Wayward Angels), independently released their acoustic CD 'Fall'. Following the success of Wayward Angels, Kathy was convinced it was time to launch her full time solo career.
It was not until late 1999 that Kathy turned her focus from teaching to Country Music with the release of her debut EP 'KATHY LEE - WAYWARD ANGEL' (produced by NASH CHAMBERS). Kathy performed at several of LEE KERNAGHAN'S PASS THE HAT AROUND CONCERTS throughout Queensland which lead to tour work with KERNAGHAN. Kathy released her first single, 'STRONG HEARTED MAN' to Australian radio in December 1999. Her strong distinctive vocals and extraordinary songwriting, made the EP a breath of fresh air with an individual approach to Country Music.
In June 2001, Kathy released her second EP 'Wildflowers' (recorded by Dash McIvor - Stargate Production, Brisbane). The single release from her new EP, 'FALLING APART' immediately charted on Australia's National Top 20 Chart, hence receiving extensive airplay. 'Falling Apart' wond the Queensland Recording Association Award (the SUNNIES) for 'Best Song - Country 2001'. Ironically, the second song from the EP, 'BABY IT'S YOU' was a top five (5) finalist in the same category. Kathy's new EP continued to show her individuality.
Kathy is a songwriter who takes the time to sink her individuality into each song she creates. She tells stories in her music - stories of her own personal life and loves. As sweet or as hard as life can be, her music is a real examination of the world as it is, and as we would wish it to be.
Kathy has played alongside and/or supported many of Australia's top country music acts including Kasey Chambers, John Williamson, Adam Brand, Brendon Walmsley, James Blundell, Catherine Britt and Johnny Chester, etc. She has been invited to attend some of the biggest Festivals and shows including the Mildura, Katherine and Broxburn Country Music Festivals, the 'Farmhand', 'Girls With Spurs - NFS', and Independents Day Tamworth Concerts and the Bay of Islands Festival in New Zealand.
Kathy's success reinforces the 'YOUNG GUN' title she received during the 2001 Tamworth Festival which recognised Kathy as being an 'up and rising' talent in the Country Music Industry - A NAME TO WATCH OUT FOR!
Kathy is a vibrant performer - she is comfortable with her femininity and yet still recognises the importance of being not only a singer but also an entertainer. She has been described in the industry as...
"An angel in country boots...you don't know you're in danger until you've been swept away by her velvety voice".
"A Wayward Angel Kathy Lee is in terms of non-conformity with society's expectations - however it is almost a misnomer, as this young lady certainly has her feet placed firmly on the road to success". (ICE)
Kathy's music has been influenced by a number of factors. She studied classical piano for ten (10) years, listens to a wide variety of music, and ultimately, her family background.
Kathy was a finalist in the 2002 Coopers Golden Saddle Award. "Nominees for the award are chosen for their outstanding ability as independent artists by industry 'spotters' Australia-wide" (Country Music Association of Australia).
Most recently, Kathy proudly became a first-time Mother in May 2002 to twin boys, Benjamin and Elliott (see picture 'General Information'). Whilst Motherhood consuming, Kathy has continued to write and record songs for her forthcoming debut album.
Kathy's voice is undeniably Country - she has the voice, the natural stage presence, and the smile to keep her fans entertained.
Kathy teamed up some of Australia's best known country musicians to record her three (3) track EP 'Kathy Lee - Wayward Angel' and her four (4) track EP 'Wildflowers'. As a result, she has confirmed what her growing number of fans already knew -
'Kathy Lee has arrived - right at home in the Country!'
